At the threshold of the 21stcentury, we are confronted with two conflicting scenarios for the future of mankind. On one hand, there are possibilities of a bright future with press button living, space technology, information technology, genetic engineering and such other advances in science and technology.  On the other hand, a grim scenario is looming large with a burgeoning population, depletion of resources, pollution of life-supporting systems, loss of biodiversity, global warming and ozone depletion. Faced with such imminent threats, there is a growing realization that rational utilization of environmental endowments of the life-supporting system is a must for a sustainable future.
